KLEIN KAROO KLASSIQUE BEGINS WITH EXCITING TANGO PROGRAMME

SAMA nominated group performs Astor Piazzolla’s best-known works

Klein Karoo Klassique begins this Friday (12 August) with a recital of tango music by the popular Cape Town Tango Ensemble. They will perform some of Astor Piazzolla’s best-known works, as well as other classical compositions for bandoneon, accordion, violin and double bass. “We look forward to perform at Klassique and invite all music lovers to attend our recital. It is truly a wonderful programme”, says group leader, Stanislav Angelov. Moving works like Piazzolla’s, Angel SuiteFour Seasons of Buenos Aires and Adios Nonino are performed. Audiences can also look forward to compositions by Richard Galeano, Aleksandar Simić and Angelov and Charles Lazar. It is the ensemble’s first performance at Klassique.

The members of the Cape Town Tango Ensemble are Angelov (bandoneon and accordion), Petrus de Beer (violin), Albert Combrink (piano) and Charles Lazar (double bass). They have been performing locally and abroad since 1996 and released three CD’s, El Tango en Africa in 2003, Tango Club in 2010 and Tango Dreams in 2014.Tango Club was nominated for the SAMA for Best Instrumental Album in 2011. They have also made various television appearances and were involved in numerous theatre and film productions. Angelov, originally an accordionist from Bulgaria, obtained a bandoneon (an instrument that is part of the concertina family and frequently used in tango music) in 2004. He travelled to Buenos Aires in 2005 to further study this instrument. De Beer is one of South Africa’s foremost violinists and a lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch. Pianist, Combrink is a multifaceted musician and has worked with various artists during his career. Lazar is a well-known composer and double bassist.According to Rhodé Snyman, CEO of Klein Karoo Klassique, this year’s programme varies from early baroque music to contemporary compositions. “We celebrate these classical influences in a format that young and old will enjoy”, she says. Other recitals include performances by Wouter Kellerman, James Grace and Erik Dippenaar.
